10 Ways to Avoid Looking like a Tourist

We are all tourists in one way or another, right? However, we all hear all too much that tourists are often the victims of travel-related crimes. Now, common crimes such as pickpocketing can happen to anyone. But if you single yourself out as a person who doesn’t know their way around and generally foreign, it’s much easier to be a target of crime.

I have thought of 10 things that I abide by when travelling around new areas. Don’t get me wrong, just because of following these steps does automatically not make you a victim of a crime or vice versa. These are just a few helpful tips and ideas to be aware of while travelling.

1. You don’t always need that backpack

I am not talking about those trendy small backpacks, but the ones that contain almost your whole life eg backpackers bags or even day packs. Trust me, most places around the world have complimentary water, sell snacks and can provide guidance!

2. Fanny packs are a giveaway

We are all aware of the fanny pack trend hipsters are integrating into the world. To be quite frank, fanny packs to many people are often a sign of a traveller or someone who is strategically trying to avoid being pickpocketed! Perhaps if you do decide to wear that fanny pack wear it a little more interestingly, eg across your chest or in a more fashionable way!

3. Stop pulling out your maps

Come on ladies, we are in 2020 and not needing those guide books/paper maps. This is usually a HUGE giveaway. Google maps or just planning your journey before you leave is the best option! Also be sure to remember if someone asks you if you are a tourist to say “no, I lived here a while ago”. It helps to allow yourself to be seen as though you are a local.

4. Stop with all the photos

I get it, photos are an amazing visual memory book. Plus why not get that completely touristy photo in front of a certain monument. But, it’s more the over excessive photo-taking that makes you stick out like a sore thumb to a local very quickly.

5. Avoid tourist traps

The odd ones here and there are great but focus on finding some areas off the beaten track, they’re also usually less busy. So make an effort to check out some of the less popular areas and find something new!

6. Learn local phrases

It really makes a difference if you can acquaint yourself with a few local phrases or sayings. You’ll slide right in to the local culture. Plus, locals do appreciate tourists who try!

7. Always be polite

This may seem obvious, but so important. Having patience and respect for others around you is essential as they return the courtesy.

8. Banish those travel brochures

I know, it’s so easy to pick those complimentary brochures up literally wherever you are (guilty!). I know you think you will read them, but let's be real, do we actually? Save the planet and just search it up on the internet, aka your best friend while travelling!

9. Hop on Hop off/ Obvious guided tours

Now these services can be great, but really it can just be a money-making tourism scheme to show you around some overly populated tourist landmarks. Plus, it makes you stick out like a sore thumb! If you don’t want to look like a tourist, avoid these!

10. Accommodation

Make a change or an effort to try renting an Airbnb or even a flat for your stay. Often it allows you to soak up more of the culture, plus, brings you out of that tourist returning to a hotel vibe! (To be completely honest - I am a sucker for a nice hotel, so this is totally up to your preferences!)
