5 Fun Things to do in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty
I’ve got to say lately I’ve been absolutely loving exploring all around New Zealand. Having grown up here my whole life, I can’t believe it’s taken me until COVID-19 and border restrictions to international travel to get me to explore Aotearoa.
I honestly wish that I had started exploring sooner because there is so much to see, so much beauty and never enough time, right?
I decided it was time to check out the Bay of Plenty, this is definitely somewhere I’ll have to re-visit because it is so vast and I only had a few days.
The Bay of Plenty is situated in New Zealand’s north island and can be found along our gorgeous northern coastline. Stretching from the Coromandel Peninsula in the west to the Cape Runway in the east, you’ll find a variety of towns and cities including Tauranga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Puke, Ohope, Waihi Beach and more. Tauranga is the largest city of them all with a population of approximately 131,500 people.
Tauranga is a “harbourside” city that is home to many beautiful points of interest. This metropolitan style city is largely industrial, home to beautiful beaches, culture, business and international trade. But let’s get into the interesting stuff, with a large palette to start with. Sometimes it’s hard to pick out the best spots to explore and enjoy. That’s why I’ve compiled them for you below.
So without further adieu, here is my list of Top 5 Fun Things to do in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty.
5 Fun Things to do in Tauranga, Bay of Plenty
1. Mt Maunganui
Mt Maunganui is a hugely famous beach town located approximately 5-10 minutes out of Tauranga city center and hosts the “Best Beach in New Zealand”. I’ve got to say, it really does not disappoint. Surrounding the epic monstrosity that is the Mount itself is a gorgeous harbor, the white sand beach is framed by stunning blue water and a metropolis of beach-style shops and restaurants.
With so much to do in Mt Maunganui here are some of my favorite things:
Go to the beach (how could you not)
Watch sunset/sunrise on the beautiful sand
Climb the Mount (aka Mauao - it rises 232 meters from the sea, it is approximately a 40-minute climb - the views are worth it!)
Explore local cafes and restaurants - with so many options there is always something for everyone
Bring your skateboard and cruise the local streets
Enjoy browsing the beach-esque shops spotted around
2. Trinity Wharf
Trinity Wharf is Tauranga's very own stunning 5-star hotel that is located in central Tauranga. This urban hotel is placed directly beside, above and partially stretched over the bay. With stunning rooms to choose from, I wouldn’t go past a harbour view room where you can wake up to sunrises of epic proportions reflecting on the harbour waters. Moreover, the infinity pool makes for the perfect addition to your Instagram feed!
Trinity Wharf has a stunning High Tea menu for an indulgent afternoon, or if you fancy a cocktail, their weekly cocktail extravaganzas will keep you running back for more!

3. McLaren Falls Park
McLaren Falls was a stunning park located about 20 minutes outside Tauranga City Centre. I visited in late April so I was treated to a stunning array of autumn colors! This hugely expansive park is perfect for a relaxing walk, picnic, or even just sightseeing. Upon arrival, you’ll come across the most epic amalgamation of rocks formatting part of the falls. As you continue into the park, you have the option of visiting different bays, walks, and spots around the place. My favorite was definitely the very picturesque Cherry Bay. I’d also recommend popping into the cafe for a nice coffee and snack before heading back to town!
4. Whale island
Whale Island is one of Tauranga’s most epic attractions and perfect for a day out! Only 15 minutes via boat you have the choice to spend a day out or even just a few hours. Moreover, you’ll be able to explore native flora and fauna but also having fun with friends/family. With a bunch of activities to do such as kayaking, snorkelling and learning about NZ nature, there is more than enough fun for everyone.
5. Wildlife tours
Taurnaga is in the Bay of Plenty, quite clearly stretching across a beautiful coastline; there is more than enough opportunity to explore the surrounding waters. There are plenty of Marine wildlife tours where you can get off the main mainland and check out some cool species. With the area being frequented by dolphins, whales and orca you’re likely to see plenty!
Visiting such a beautiful city was a joy, I highly recommend checking out Tauranga. A must when visiting New Zealand and of course the Bay of Plenty.
